CHARNWOOD LABOUR CONDEMNS TORY COUNTY HALL'S ABANDONMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL TARGETS

Leicestershire County Council's ruling Tory Group are set to abandon a key environmental commitment to use energy from renewable sources at their Cabinet meeting to be held on the 9^th February. They are also abandoning their commitment to use recycled paper. This is despite repeated claims by Central Office that the Conservative Party is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emmisions. The County's target for energy from renewable sources was supposed to be 10% this year, rising to 20% by 2020.
This contrasts with the decision by Labour's administration at the City Council, who have recently signed a contract with BIFFA to generate renewable energy using methane obtained from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste for households and local farms.
Many major energy providers now offer green tariffs, linking fuel supplies to renewable sources such as hydro-electric generation. One company Green Energy guarantees that all its' electricity comes from renewable sources. As well as concerns over climate change, and the inevitable pollution that arises from non-renewables such as coal, gas & nuclear; the use of non-reneawable energy places took much reliance on the importation of fossil fuels from unstable parts of the world.

The actions of the County Council speak louder than Cameron's discredited slogan 'Vote Blue go Green'. Charnwood Labour will be proposing that County Hall's Conservatives should buy their electricity from the City Council's new CHP Plant once it start generating renewable electricity from household waste.
