Hear about Shepshed waste plan

People can find out more about plans for a new waste facility near Shepshed at a public meeting.

Biffa has submitted proposals for an 'energy recovery facility' which would incinerate household, commercial and industrial waste to produce sustainable energy.

The site would be located at Newhurst Quarry, south east of Shepshed, towards Loughborough.

Each year, the plant would burn up to 300,000 tonnes of waste and generate around 25MW of electricity. This would be supplied to the National Grid and used to power the plant itself - it is enough to sustain around 42,000 homes.

At the event next month, people will be able to look at the plans, speak to officers and ask questions.

Issues raised, along with all other comments made to the Council, will be taken into account before a final decision is made.

The meeting, arranged by the County Council, will take place at 7pm on Monday, 8th March at Shepshed High School, which is on Forest Street, Shepshed.

People can look at the application and supporting environmental statement by:

• logging on to the County Council’s website at www.leics.gov.uk (go to 'environment and waste' section and then 'planning' - application reference is 2009/C166/02)

• visiting County Hall where a hard copy is available

The County Council's Development Control and Regulatory Board is due to discuss the application in the next few months.

For more information about the Board meetings, please see the County Council's website (www.leics.gov.uk - go to the Your Council section) or contact the committee officer, Ms J. Bailey, on 0116 305 6225.
