Good score for road safety in Charnwood

Youngsters from four schools took part in the Charnwood area finals of the county’s annual road safety quiz last week.

Run by the County Council’s Road Safety Team, this year’s final was held at Quorn Hall, a neutral venue for the four competing teams.

Qualifying rounds ran around the county from November, involving 10,000 children from local schools and the four highest scoring schools made it to each area final.

The highest scoring teams were Loughborough Church of England Primary, Swithland St Leonard's Church of England Primary , Wymeswold Church of England Primary, and Our Lady’s Convent, Loughborough. Three of these schools competed against each other in seven rounds for the Charnwood title.

Each contestant was given an interactive control with which to answer the questions, which were projected onto a large screen at the front of the room.

Rounds included one inspired by the television game show ‘A Question of Sport’ and video observation featuring ‘Tales of the Road’, the junior Highway Code. The variety of rounds provided a hard-fought and rather tense contest.

Our Lady’s Convent - also winners back in 2008 - eventually came out on top, pipping Loughborough C of E to the post by only 2 points. Swithland St Leonard's C of E Primary came in third.

Lesley Pendleton, County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Every child who took part showed a good standard of road safety knowledge and should be very proud to have made it to the finals.

“Teaching basic rules such as the Green Cross Code is hugely important in keeping our children safe and helping to reduce the number of lives lost on Leicestershire’s roads.”
