Good score for road safety

Youngsters from four schools took part in the Blaby, Oadby and Wigston area finals of the county’s annual Road Safety Quiz last week.

Run by the County Council’s Road Safety and Travel Awareness Team, this year’s final was held at Braunstone Civic Centre, a neutral venue for the four competing teams.

Qualifying rounds ran around the county from November, involving 10,000 children from local schools and the four highest scoring schools made it to each area final.

The finalists were Glen Hills Primary, Hallbrook Primary (Broughton Astley), All Saints Church of England Primary (Sapcote) and St Peter’s Church of England Primary (Whetstone). Teams from the four schools competed against each other in seven rounds for the area title.

Each contestant was given an interactive control with which to answer the questions, which were projected onto a large screen at the front of the room.

Rounds included one inspired by the television game show ‘A Question of Sport’ and video observation featuring ‘Tales of the Road’, the junior Highway Code. The variety of rounds provided a hard-fought and rather tense contest.

Sapcote’s All Saints Primary eventually came out on top, winning by 15 points. They took home a trophy for each contestant and one for the school.

Lesley Pendleton, County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Every child who took part showed a good standard of road safety knowledge and should be very proud to have made it to the finals.

“Teaching basic rules such as the Green Cross Code is hugely important in keeping our children safe and helping to reduce the number of lives lost on Leicestershire’s roads.”
