More people enjoying county museums

More people are enjoying trips to Leicestershire’s museums, new figures reveal.

The news comes following national reports that more people are visiting museums, for a cheap and enjoyable day out during the current economic downturn.

In Leicestershire, paying visitor numbers are up 26.6 per cent at Bosworth Battlefield (43,652 for the first three quarters of the current year) and Snibston Discovery Museum (2.6 per cent, 71,112).

At the County Council’s free admission museums, visitor figures over the same period are up at the revamped Harborough Museum (26.4 per cent, 8,128), Donington-le-Heath Manor House (10.4 per cent, 21,509) and Charnwood Museum (1.6 per cent, 42,176). Melton Museum was closed for refurbishment during this period.

In addition, the free Leicester City FC centenary exhibition at Snibston Discovery Museum has attracted 7,500 visitors so far, since January 16th.

David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adults and Communities, said: “I’m delighted that our museums are proving to be so popular.

“Our museums offer a wide range of activities, so everyone should be able to find something that appeals to them – whether they are interested in sport, ancient history or wildlife.”
