Safety boost for Coalville students *** photo opportunity ***

Pupils, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers are set to benefit from road improvements designed to boost safety in Coalville and Whitwick.

Work has been carried out in Leicester Road, Meadow Lane and Warren Hills Road near to Castle Rock High School and King Edward VII College following an accident study which showed a number of accidents in the area.

New vehicle activated signs have been installed on the approaches to the junction with Meadow Lane and advanced warning signs of bends ahead have been added along Leicester Road.

Speed limits have been reduced all around the area, including an advisory 20mph zone on Meadow Lane outside Castle Rock School. Anti-skid road surfaces have been laid at the Leicester Road/Meadow Lane junction as well as new road markings outside King Edward VII College.

Crossing points near the schools have been upgraded with the installation of tactile paving and dropped kerbs and to further complement the scheme, Castle Rock High School has re-directed a pedestrian footpath away from the main car park area to provide a safer access to the school for pupils.

The work, carried out by the County Council, cost £56,000.

Ivan Ould, Cabinet Member for the Children and Young People's Service, said: “The safety of the community is paramount and this is why we have invested in extensive improvements to this area.

“We want to reduce the risk of accidents or injuries and enrich quality of life for residents, in particular the students at Castle Rock and King Edward VII, who should benefit from a safer route to school.”

Lesley Pendleton, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We take all aspects of road safety very seriously and these improvements aim to minimise the risk of accidents along this stretch of road and at the Meadow Lane junction.

“We want to achieve more appropriate traffic speeds to improve road safety and we hope this will encourage more people to walk and cycle which is healthy, environmetally-friendly and should help to reduce congestion at the school gate.”

Accident and investigation studies took place over a three year period between 2005 and 2007 and showed that 12 collisions occurred during this time resulting in one person being killed and 18 injured.
