Pupils scoop Easter poster prizes

Leicestershire Waste Partnership

A chocolate egg and a catchy message have helped a nine-year-old youngster scoop top prize in a poster competition.

The design, created by Tyler Hadley from Latimer Primary School in Anstey, features the slogan 'is the wrapping really worth it?' and is fronting a campaign encouraging residents to cut waste at Easter.

Leicestershire Waste Partnership asked pupils to come up with a picture for the drive - urging people to choose eggs with less wrapping or make gifts at home - and received almost 700 entries from primary schools across the county.

Seven-year-old Charlotte Fountain from Old Mill Primary School in Broughton Astley was the winner of the four to seven year old age group. Brad Smith, also seven and from the same school, was highly commended for his quirky design which featured a Gok Wan theme.

All three pupils' designs will be used as newspaper adverts and posters at various locations around the county during March. The winning pupils from both age groups will receive a framed copy of their posters, a £15 book voucher and a certificate.

Cllr Michael Rook, Chair of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: "The standard of the posters was incredibly high, making choosing the winners very difficult. This was a fun way for children to get involved in a campaign whilst learning about waste at the same time."

Cllr Tony Kershaw, Vice Chair of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: "I'm delighted that so many children were inspired to put pen to paper. The pupils showed a great understanding of the impact of packaging waste and had some fantastic ideas of how to avoid it at Easter, showing the new generation are really keen to reduce waste.”

As the school with the overall winning poster, Latimer Primary School received £100 worth of ESPO vouchers.  Pupils from the winning school were visited last Wednesday by Cllr Tony Kershaw who presented the awards to Tyler.

The competition entries were judged from a shortlist by Cllr Michael Rook and Cllr Tony Kershaw. Three runners up were chosen from each category who will all receive a certificate.

The competition is part of Leicestershire Waste Partnership’s Easter Waste Reduction campaign, which aims to encourage residents to cut down on their Easter waste.

Why not think about different options to the usual chocolate eggs to reduce the amount of packaging going to waste this Easter?

You could:

• Buy foil-wrapped, not boxed, eggs

• Choose eggs with less packaging or recycled packaging

• Make your own Easter eggs using an egg mould

• Hand paint and decorate eggshells. Make a small hole in both ends of the shell and blow the egg out first

• Make a papier mâché egg for homemade Easter gifts.

Notes:

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is made up of the seven districts of Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire, Oadby and Wigston, together with the County Council.

The Partnership has a clear vision for sustainable waste management.

It aims to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill – by preventing waste in the first place, encouraging reuse, recycling and composting, and treating what’s leftover before disposal.

Working together, the partners aim to recycle or compost 58% of rubbish by 2017.
