Action packed week boosts community

Around 10 tonnes of rubbish were collected, a “buggy fit walk” was held and health checks took place as part of a community action week in Mountsorrel.

Organisations including Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire Police and Voluntary Action Charnwood worked with local residents to organise the busy week which aimed to improve the environment and boost residents’ fitness and wellbeing.

Initiatives included:

- An environmental action day. This included a community litterpick which saw around 10 tonnes of general waste and around 40 white goods (eg fridges and washing machines) collected.

- A health and wellbeing day. This included exercise taster sessions, blood pressure and BMI (body mass index) tests and cookery demonstrations.

- A community / information day. This was held at the Lindens Public House and was attended by the Mayor of Charnwood, Roy Brown. Information stands offering information on a number of topics such as housing, recycling, safety and arts and learning opportunities were set up.

- A BMX display by the UK flat landing champion Keelan Phillips at the Revive Youth Club

- Activities for the under fives and their families/carers, including a “buggy fit walk”and wriggly readers session.

- A special assembly by the borough council’s waste Waste Education Officer at Christ Church and St Peters C of E School

Cllr Roy Brown, Mayor of Charnwood, said: “It is great to see that community spirit is alive and well in Mountsorrel and I would like to congratulate everyone who helped organise and take part in the action week.

“By working together we can only make communities stronger. I look forward to hearing about events like this in the village in the future.”

Mountsorrel resident Alex Wallace said: “I think this is a good thing for the people of Mountsorrel. It gives us a chance to work together to improve things in the village.

“I have enjoyed working with Helen Clarke, from the council’s Communities and Partnerships Team, in planning and organising the events – we were delighted with the number of locals that attended and we will hopefully continue to see more people take interest in working together as a community!”
