LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – 2 February 2012: Leading provider of intuitive software solutions to the mining and exploration industry, MICROMINE (UK) has awarded a £1000 Bursary to Sinead Fenton -- an undergraduate geology student from the University of Leicester. MICROMINE’s UK office recently launched its Student Bursary Programme to invest in the technical development of geoscience students. In addition to granting financial assistance, the programme offers a summer work placement with MICROMINE’s London-based team, and the opportunity to conduct a company-sponsored research study that will contribute to the student’s degree programme.
Sinead Fenton is currently a third-year student in the University of Leicester’s MGeol Applied and Environmental Geology programme. On receiving the award she commented “I’m really passionate about the role of geology in society, especially with regards to the mining and exploration sectors. I am excited to have been selected for MICROMINE’s student bursary and feel that the programme will provide me with enduring experiences and skills for entering the industry as a graduate”.
Head of the Department of Geology, Professor Mike Lovell said “We are delighted to be involved with this exciting MICROMINE initiative. Through this collaboration, MICROMINE is providing financial support to a student, but more importantly enabling valuable work experience and the opportunity for a student to be involved in industry-based research.
He continues “Initiatives such as this allow students to see beyond academia, to develop their technical skills and improve their employability options. MICROMINE’s support clearly recognises the mutual benefits of links between academia and industry. We look forward to building upon this success and to further collaborative developments."
James Hogg – MICROMINE’s Regional Manager, Europe added “We are pleased to have strengthened our research and technical partnership with the University of Leicester’s Department of Geology. In addition to gaining experience with Micromine - our flagship exploration and mine modelling solution for class projects, students will now have the opportunity to enhance their industry insight and employability profile, through our annual Student Bursary programme. We look forward to helping prepare Sinead for a flourishing industrial career.”
MICROMINE is a key partner to world-class educational institutions around the globe. The speed, advanced functionalities and user-friendliness of Micromine – the company’s industry-leading software, has helped the technology become a tremendous asset to faculty staff and students.
