The Art of Jackson Pollock
Jackson Pollock was an American painter whose most famous paintings were during the "drip period" between 1947 and 1950. Instead of using the traditional easel he affixed his canvas to the floor or the wall and poured or dripped his paint from a can. Instead of using brushes he moved the paint around with sticks and trowels. He rocketed to popular status following an August 8, 1949 four-page spread in Life Magazine that asked, "Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?" At the peak of his fame, Pollock abruptly abandoned the drip style. His work however continues to inspire  and his name is associated with the all-over style of painting which avoids any points of emphasis or identifiable parts within the whole canvas and therefore abandons the traditional idea of composition in terms of relations among parts.
Charnwood Museum in Loughborough and ArtSpace are offering visitors the chance to explore their own creative talents and produce their own ‘Pollock’ paintings. Artist Phillip Ayriss will lead the workshops and guide participants through what promises be a thoroughly fun, and messy, process. Phillip, is a member of ArtSpace and has exhibited with the group both locally and internationally.
The workshops form part of a series of artistic workshops held at Charnwood Museum by professional artists from ArtSpace. Each week participants can explore different craft and art forms with the aid of ArtSpace experts. The workshop series covers a huge variety of techniques from glass painting to jewellery making.
Workshops cost £5.00 per person including materials (concessions £2.50). Concessions are available for people in receipt of benefits. ArtZone is for children aged 8 - 14 years and is held on Saturday mornings from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Create Too on Sunday afternoons, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, is for adults.
