Parking Fines in Loughborough

New parking fines are due to be introduced across Loughborough next week.
From Monday (March 31st), the government requires county councils to introduce a two-tier parking charge system. There will be two different ‘bands’ of charges, depending on the parking offence.
A £50 fine will be issued for ‘lower rate’ offences, such as parking for longer than restrictions permit, while motorists will receive a £70 fine for ‘higher level’ contraventions. These could include parking on double yellow lines, parking in a taxi rank or on ‘zig zags’ outside a school.
Previously, all types of offence were issued with a £60 fine.
For both levels of parking fine, the charge will be reduced by 50% for prompt payment.
Councils took over parking enforcement from the police in July 2007 to allow the police to concentrate on fighting crime.
Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Leader of Leicestershire County Council with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “The current system is working well and we hope that the new fines will help us to continue to tackle drivers who park inconsiderately.
“There is no doubt that people who ignore parking and waiting restrictions contribute to congestion. It’s the job of the councils to try to keep roads clear and free from obstruction, to allow access for the emergency services and to help buses be able to stick to their timetables.”

The parking charge will be reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days.
There are nearly 50 parking attendants around the County.
Since July 2007 39,410 parking tickets have been issued, at £60 per fine this equates to fines of over £2,000,000 being issued.
