Loughborough’s footballers were crowned Cup champions on Monday (5 May) after the students beat West Midlands rival Cadbury Athletic 2-0 in the final of the Endsleigh Challenge Cup at Hednesford Town.

Striker Phil Miller scored twice for the Challenge Cup title in Loughborough’s first season in the tournament, capping an incredible year for the University side.

Loughborough took the lead in a cagey first half through Miller with a fine strike after a large spell of pressure. Noel Clarkson and Luke Horrocks impressed throughout the game, Clarkson winning the midfield battle for Loughborough and Horrocks defending with confidence and composure. The students were 1-0 up at the break.

The second half saw Cadbury dominate for large spells as they searched for that equaliser without really creating too many clear cut opportunities. And with time running out they threw caution to the wind as Cadbury keeper Jamie Atkins came forward for a corner.

But his Loughborough counterpart David Coombes took the ball superbly in the air and threw the ball past a stranded Atkins to super striker Miller, who ran the length of the field to plant the ball home and give Loughborough their deserved trophy.

“We are all delighted that after so much hard work this season we have a couple of trophies to show for it,” said Loughborough Students chairman Peter Simmons. “It is a tremendous achievement to finish fourth in the league and win the League Cup in our first season.

“Added to that our developments in Futsal where we won BUSA Gold, this year has given Loughborough a fantastic platform to move forward.”
