STORIES, photographs and memories of local people remembering the Partition of India are needed for a new exhibition in Leicester.

Lord Mayor of Leicester, Cllr Manjula Sood will formally open the first roadshow on Saturday (5th) at 11am at St Barnabas Library, French Road, Leicester.

The city council is appealing for people to come forward with their stories and memories to contribute to the ‘Legacy of Partition 1947-1948’ project and exhibition.

Cllr Sood said: “It is a great honour to officially open this roadshow. My parents actually witnessed the official ceremony at the Red Fort marking Partition on 15th August 1947. “Our family has grown up with these stories and memories, and my mother has contributed photos and given an interview to be included in this project. “I’m sure there are lots of stories and memories from local people who experienced one of the landmark events of the 20th century. By sharing these experiences we can bring our communities

even closer together.â€

St Barnabas Library is the first venue to host the touring roadshow with includes some memorabilia collected by the city council in partnership with Leicestershire Records Office. Staff will be available to help local people who want to contribute to the exhibition.

The ‘Legacy of Partition 1947-1948’ is one of 28 projects nationwide funded by the ‘Their Past Your Future 2’ grant programme run by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).

The roadshow is open at St Barnabas Library from 5th July to 2nd August. It then moved to Hamilton Library (4th August), Belgrave Library (1st September), Beaumont Leys Library (20th October) and Westcotes Library (17th November) before moving to venues in the county.

Anyone who would like to make a contribution to the project should contact Margaret Bonney at the Records Office on 0116 257 1080 or email mbonney@leics.gov.uk.

The final exhibition is planned for 2009.
