Armed robbery at bookmakers in city centre

Police are appealing for witnesses after an armed robbery at a bookmaker in the city centre.

The incident happened in Northampton Street at around 4.38pm on Monday July 7, 2008 at Mark Jarvis.

A man entered the premises and threatened the 41-year-old female victim with what is believed to be a handgun, before making off with a quantity of cash.

The suspect is described as black, between 5'6" and 5'7" tall and in his early twenties. He was wearing dark blue or black jacket with a hood, a florescent yellow vest and blue denim jeans.

Detective Sergeant Dave Speight, who is investigating the incident said: "The incident has obviously left the victim shaken and fortunately she was not hurt.

"We believe the suspect was in the Northampton Street area earlier in the day between 1.30pm and 2pm. He was wearing a florescent jacket and we are appealing to anyone who saw someone matching this description to come forward.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident or earlier in the day and saw a man matching this description. If you witnessed the incident but have not yet spoken to us please get in touch. Any information you have could be vital so we would ask you to contact us."
