5 Tips For Potty Training a PuppyBy Lee Dobbins

Veterinarians and pet stores are often bombarded with desperate pleas from new dog owners who need tips for potty training a puppy however in reality it is usually the owner that needs to be trained! You see, potty training a puppy is really a game of patience and persistence and that is something that a lot of dog owners don't have.

If you really want your puppy to be housebroken, you need to resign yourself to the fact that it's going to take some effort on your part. You have to take the responsibility to train the dog, not the other way around. You know your puppy wants to please you, however if you are giving him mixed signals, how can you expect him to know what to do?

Luckily, you can easily housebreak or potty train your dog if you just remember the five simple steps listed below. Sticking to a routine and schedule is key as well as understanding your puppy's needs and working with them - not against them.

5 Tips For Potty Training A Puppy

1. Work With Nature. When potty training your dog you want to go with nature and that means getting to know your dog's habits and keeping a close eye on him so you know when he is thinking about doing his "business". When you notice that it is time for him to "go", you can head off any accidents by simply taking him outside and telling them to do his business. When he complies, of course, you want to lavish them with praise and maybe even give them a treat so he knows that doing this business outside is a good thing to do.

2. Bring Your Pup Outside Right Away. As I stated in step one, you want to bring your dog outside right away as soon as you notice that he is thinking about going. If you see him squatting or sniffing around, distract him and pick them up and get him outside right away. I don't care if you're in the middle of cooking dinner or watching your favorite TV program it's vital that you interrupt him from going in the house and get them outside right away.

3. Always Use Positive Reinforcement. One of the most important tips for potty training a puppy is to always reward your dog when hedoes his "business" outside however never punish him when you happen across an accident inside. If you do see him about to eliminate inside then you can get his attention with a voice command and bring him outside, however after he has gone inside, dragging him over and rubbing his face and it will do you no good. You see, the dog doesn't realize why you are punishing him after the fact and it will only cause confusion.

4. Remember, Puppies Have Small Bladders. Don't expect your puppy to be able to hold it for 10 hours while you're at work. Puppies have small bladders and you need to take this into account in your training. While it's ideal to be on hand every time your puppy has to go so you can burn him outside, if you do have to work, you will have to consider an alternate method - paper or pad training.

5. Clean Up Accidents Thoroughly. When your puppy has an accident in the house, and he will, you need to clean it up right away so that the smell isn't there anymore. The smell can attract them to want to eliminate in this area and getting rid of it will assist and help your house training efforts.

These as some of the basic tips for potty training a puppy, however if you really want to be successful, you should consider an in-depth course where you can train your dog at home. Thinking of training as a bonding exercise between you and your dog will assist and help take some of the stress out of what can be a trying time.

How to Potty Train Your Puppy the Right WayBy Randy Gauthier

Congratulations on your new puppy. Now you want to know how to potty train puppy the right way. First off, let me start by saying that this will take some patience and dedication on your part however I assure you the rewards of training your puppy to go to the bathroom in the correct spots will make your relationship all that much healthier and will truly make this new puppy your greatest friend. Here are a few quick tips to make your puppies potty training successful

How To Potty Train Puppy The Correct Way:

1)It is always important to start your new puppies training immediately when you get him home. Please try to remember though that at this point your puppies bladders and the control they have over them are not yet fully developed and there are going to be accidents.

2) Prepare a feeding schedule and stick to it as much as possible. This is important as your puppies bathroom habits are directly influenced by the food and liquids that they consume. Puppies will normally go to the bathroom within 10-15 minutes of eating or drinking. A routine is essential. I would suggest taking up your puppies food and water (H20) bowls 2 hours before bedtime and always taking your puppy out to the designated potty spot immediately following meal times and before bed.

3) For initial training it is suggested to confine your puppy to small restricted spaces when you are unable to keep a eye on him. This will reduce accidents as most dogs will not defecate where they eat or sleep. If you are against crate training, a small room like a laundry room or kitchen, I have found effective. You will want to make sure that youconfine to floors that are easily washable until your puppy is successfully house trained.

4) Designate a spot. By this I mean designate a spot where you would like your puppy to perform its business and always take your puppy to this spot when you want it to go "potty" remember to always use the same word when commanding your puppy to go.

5) Be sure to praise the puppy and reward them with a small playtime or treat every time it does "the business". Positive reinforcement will be your biggest tool in how to potty train puppy the right way.

Remember that your puppy is going to make accidents and trying to ignore them and not scold them for their mistakes however offering praises for the correct actions will significantly improve your success of potty training your puppy.

By following these tips the question of "How to Potty Train Puppy" successfully will become a lot clearer and you will be on your way to a long and great friendship with your new pooch.

Potty Training Your Puppy - 4 Tips to SuccessBy Joyce A. Rogers

Are you trying to potty train your puppy however it seems like your puppy is not progressing?  Tired of cleaning up accidents on the carpet? In this article I am going to give you some tips that will hopefully help your issue. Lets get started...

- Routine Potty Breaks

A puppy's body is still developing when they are born. Their bladder will not fully develop until they are about 5-6 months in age. Until the bladder is fully developed it is greatest to take your dog out every 2 hours. As your puppy gets closer to 5 months they can go longer during breaks. Be sure to take your puppy outside immediately after drinking water (H20) or waking up from their nap.

- Limit Water Intake

Another potty training tip is to remove your puppy's water (H20) bowl before bedtime. If you put the puppy to sleep at around 10pm, try removing the water (H20) bowl at 7pm. This will give them time to empty their bladder before going to bed.

- Oops, They did it Again

If your puppy has an accident inside the house be sure to clean it up right away. When cleaning you will need to use a cleaner designed to remove pet odors. You should be able to pick this odor neutralizing spray cleaner at all pet stores, Natures Miracle is the one I like to use. Ifyou do not eliminate the odor it may actually attract the dog to the area again. Watch out for household cleaners, some contain ammonia that will also attract pets.

- Consistent Training

If you are training your puppy with someone else, spouse or kids, make sure everyone is on the same page.  It can be very confusing if everyone is trying to train the puppy in a different way.  Puppies need a constant training routine.  If you are going to praise your puppy for going outside to potty make sure everyone who takes the puppies outside also praises for a job well done.  Being a puppy can be confusing, we don't need to add to it.

These are some tips that will assist and help potty train your puppy. Remember when training your puppy you will get out what you put in.
