When you're potty training puppies, its inevitable that there will be an accident at some point. After all your puppy is still learning and won't be perfect yet. When an accident does happen, here's what you need to know to clean up the mess.
Two of your most important tools when potty training puppies will be plenty of paper towels and a good enzymatic cleaner. An enzymatic cleaner is the only way to completely break up the smell of urine and poop, which is very important when potty training puppies. Your puppy's nose is a lot stronger than yours and he'll want to do his business wherever he can still pick up a scent from a previous visit. There are several enzymatic cleaners on the market and they all work well. Do not use ammonia! Ammonia has a very similar smell to urine and will only encourage your puppy to do his business where he can smell it. Ammonia will completely set you back when potty training puppies.
The most likely accident to happen when potty training puppies is urinating in the house. If your puppy urinates on carpet, take a loose bunch of paper towels and soak up as much as you can. Pat lightly and don't press or rub the urine into the carpet. This will only make the situation worse. You'll need to use several bunches of paper towels and repeat this process until you don't see any urine on the paper towels. Once that's done soak the carpet completely with the enzymatic cleaner. The easiest way to do this is with a spray bottle.
Again, take a wad of towels and soak up the enzymatic cleaner you just sprayed. This will pull out the cleaner and any urine youmissed the first time. As soon as the towels aren't absorbing any more, spray the area one last time and let the enzymatic cleaner sit.
Potty training puppies doesn't just mean urine accidents in the house. If your puppy poops in the house, have newspapers and a flat "scoop" available. Use the scoop to slide under the poop and put it on the newspaper. Once again you need to spray the area with enzymatic cleaner and pat it dry with the paper towels. Repeat the process until the paper towels don't show any color. The final step as more enzymatic cleaner and letting it sit.
Once you've been successful potty training puppies, its a good idea to have your carpets professionally cleaned. Wait until your puppy is reliable about going outside before you do this since this will be a bit of an investment.
By following these tips for cleaning up messes when accidents happen, you'll be sure your puppy won't be able to find the spots where he made a mistake. This will mean you'll be much more successful with your potty training puppies efforts. Just make sure you have a lot of paper towels.

However, when it comes to potty training puppies most new owners dread the project and don't know where to begin. Here are 4 initial things you need to know for successfully potty training puppies.
1. Make a Schedule
The most important thing you can do when potty training puppies is to set a schedule and, more importantly, stick to it. If you keep track of when your puppy (dog typically under 1 year old) eats, drinks and plays you'll have a good idea about when to take him out. Dogs are creatures of habit so the more regimented the schedule and the more you stick to it, the easier it will be for your puppy (dog typically under 1 year old) to learn what you expect from him. As a rule, you should take your puppy (dog typically under 1 year old) out immediately after eating, playing or sleeping. That's when he'll most likely need to do his business. As you get this routine established, you'll minimize the risk of accidents and increase you're puppy's confidence. Soon he'll be able to go longer before he needs to go out.
2. How Often Does Your Puppy Need to Go Out?
As previously mentioned, when potty training puppies they need to go out immediately after eating, sleeping and playing. - Routine Potty Breaks
A puppy's body is still developing when they are born. Their bladder will not fully develop until they are about 5-6 months in age. Until the bladder is fully developed it is greatest to take your dog out every 2 hours. As your puppy gets closer to 5 months they can go longer during breaks. Be sure to take your puppy outside immediately after drinking water (H20) or waking up from their nap.
- Limit Water Intake
Another potty training tip is to remove your puppy's water (H20) bowl before bedtime. If you put the puppy to sleep at around 10pm, try removing the water (H20) bowl at 7pm. This will give them time to empty their bladder before going to bed.
- Oops, They did it Again
If your puppy has an accident inside the house be sure to clean it up right away. When cleaning you will need to use a cleaner designed to remove pet odors. You should be able to pick this odor neutralizing spray cleaner at all pet stores, Natures Miracle is the one I like to use. Ifyou do not eliminate the odor it may actually attract the dog to the area again. Watch out for household cleaners, some contain ammonia that will also attract pets.
- Consistent Training
If you are training your puppy with someone else, spouse or kids, make sure everyone is on the same page. It can be very confusing if everyone is trying to train the puppy in a different way. Puppies need a constant training routine. If you are going to praise your puppy for going outside to potty make sure everyone who takes the puppies outside also praises for a job well done. Being a puppy can be confusing, we don't need to add to it.
