Accounting and Business Success

Accounting and Business SuccessBy Tyson Russell

Accounting is to business as navigation is to sailing.

Recently, I replied to someone's question about the pivotal role of an accounting department in a successful business. I thought I would share some of these thoughts in the form of an article.

Let me start by saying that accounting is the means to an end. If a business (or household) wants to achieve a certain goal, be it a certain level of profitability or sales volume, it needs a guidepost to know if it has reached its goal. Accounting is that guidepost.

A sound accounting system accurately measures where a company is at at any given time and can tell you how it got there. This may sound cliché, however it is true.

In essence, and I have said this before, accounting seeks to expose the reality in which a business operates. And this is why companies with good accounting systems have a distinct advantage over companies without quality systems.

A company's management can believe anything it wants about the company: how profitable it is, whether it is solvent, and any other number of things. But, it is the accounting system that guides management to action because it makes it limits actions to what is possible at the time and into the near future.

Taking imprudent or reckless action, without reference to a company's financial condition can kill a company. Imagine if a catering company owner, thinking with his sense of vanity rather than his reason, decides to buy a Mercedes Benz SUV to better advertise the company, diverting vital cash away from the leases it has on kitchen equipment.

Needless to say, foolish actions can be averted if a company's accounting systems and its financial statements are respected.

Nowto finish off...

This article may look like it is trying to make accounting seem more important than it actually is. Yes, accounting is largely about making sure the bills are paid and inventories are tracked properly- rather mundane stuff. But guess what, accounting is also the system that tracks, as well as possible, the capabilities of a company's money-generating resources. If a lumber mill isn't making money, it is accounting that tells the management that. If the caesar salad at a restaurant is unprofitable, accounting is telling you that!

It's simple really, business is, after all, about making money! And the only way a business knows it is actually making any money is through its accounting system.

To go ahead in a serious business without a proper accounting system, is as foolish as Columbus going across the Atlantic without a compass. Thank you.

All About Manufacturing Accounting Software

All About Manufacturing Accounting SoftwareBy Gordon Petten

Manufacturing accounting software is like general business accounting software that has been more specialized to serve companies who manufacture, create, distribute, and sell inventory. Most small companies may feel they can survive without manufacturing accounting software, and may even try to get buy using a simple spreadsheet to track their production and costs, however the software will become necessary as the business expands beyond the point where the manager can just walk out to the warehouse and see the number of jobs and purchase orders the company has.

When it becomes to difficult to keep track of things like the number of quotes and jobs the company has, manufacturing accounting software can mean the difference between success and failure of the business. While major corporations may need all the bells and whistles of an enterprise resource planning software (ERP), a manufacturing company will not necessarily need that.

The main functions of manufacturing accounting software should include an ability to cost out jobs and products, an ability to help with material planning, a job tracking function, and basic accounting functions. These are the most important criteria for manufacturing accounting software because without these functions, the manufacturing company is operating blindly. Add too much more than the basic needs, and the cost of the program and associated support and consultation and the business will spend more than it needs to spend to meet its accounting needs.

While the low-end accounting software available at an office supply store does not offerenough in the realm of manufacturing accounting, going to the other extreme of an ERP is overkill. A manufacturer needs to be able to manage (1) the costs associated with the production of the product, (2) inventory levels of both raw goods and finished products, (3) the progress of jobs in the system, and (4) whether or not you're making any money and how much.

Luckily, there are several manufacturing accounting software packages on the market that are designed for the small to mid-size manufacturing company and created to fit that niche more specifically than the out-of-the-box boiler plate accounting software packages and aren't the overkill of ERP systems.

To survive in today's competitive market, manufacturers must constantly work to decrease production time and costs while constantly delivering high quality products at a fair price. By integrating a manufacturing accounting software package, companies can more easily meet the demands of their customers while still managing their costs at a level that allows them to be profitable.
