The name itself conjures up an image of a large fierce animal, big as bull, always ready to tear you into pieces. Nothing could be farther than that when it comes to the Mammoth American Pit bull. Its name looks and the very characteristics that make it a favorite dog of many, have turned against this gentle giant and made it a subject of controversy.

The American pit bulls are descendants of the famous English bulldogs and terriers. They were imported to America by the settlers. These dogs though aggressive in the fighting ring were loving and loyal companions to the owners and the family. With the ban on dog fighting, they were bred purely as pets. Any aggressive tendencies towards humans were culled and what was left was a great dog with a big heart and a strong body.

American Pit bulls vary in size. Their height ranges from 18 - 22 inches and they weigh between 22 to 110 pounds. Most dogs of this breed are small in size. Pit bulls are cross bred with larger breeds to get litters of extra large size dogs.
