Benefits of Martial Arts For Children
Benefits of Martial Arts For ChildrenBy Mark Volansky
Martial arts have always had a mystique attached to them for most adults. The hollywood movie industry has turned the art into an entertainment and action vehicle that has no doubt made untold millions at the box office. But on a much different scale and in real life, martial arts can have an extremely positive effect on all who actually participate in the sport, especially children.
Having been involved in martial arts for many years, I have personally seen the transformation of many children. Some have been shy and lacking in self confidence, others have been more aggressive and certainly not lacking confidence in any way. Both categories have shown dramatic changes in their personalities because of the aspects of martial arts that are sometimes either not realized or just overlooked.
For those young children who come into a dojo (training hall) for the first time, they are quickly thrust into an environment that demands respect, humility, self discipline, and obviously hard work, both physical amd mental. Some have seen way too many martial arts movies and expect to come and perform all the fancy spin kicks and fighting techniques in the first couple days. What they come to realize is that to get to the level to perform advanced techniques like they see on TV ( many of which are enhanced by cameras and editing) requires hundred if not thousands of repetitive actions. To the majority, this dose of reality tends to dampen their enthusiasm at least temporarily. But for those who stay committed, they gradually learn that martial arts is a way of life, not just a sport.
The number of students who join martial arts and eventually advance to the black belt level is quite small. After a relatively short period, the children who have become disillusioned eventually drop out. This is normal and to be expected. For those who remain and stay committed, the advantages accrue rather quickly. They realize that all the elements that they are requiredto learn and master can and will be carried over to other activities in their lives. If they are involved in other sports, they recognize the discipline and self confidence they learn can greatly affect their performance in those sports. They also realize that the level of respect they receive from their peers is enhanced. This is not because they act tougher or exhibit their training in a public way. It is just a matter of acquiring a great deal of self confidence from enduring touch physical and mental training in the dojo. This is reflected in the way they carry themsevles with a greater degree of earned self confidence.
For those students who do not participate in other sports, they project their self confidence in other ways. It might be better grades in school because of their ability to stay focused and on task. Or it could be they are looked upon by their peers with a greater degree of respect because they carry themselves with a type of quiet confidence that is recognized by others.
The benefits of martial arts for children of all ages are many and varied depending on the personality of the individual. That being said, it is one of the greatest individual activities any parent can get their children involved with. It is many times a life changing experience, because the discipline, confidence, respect for themselves and others as well as the obvious self defense aspects are traits they can carry with them always.
