Dog Allergies Causing Skin Problems
Dog Allergies Causing Skin ProblemsBy Daisy Sawtelle
From personal experience as a dog, I have several suggestions for training humans to become better dog mentors. I have found the most common problem is itching of the skin, either localized (one area) or generalized (all over your dog). If your dog is allergic to the wrong substances, there will be skin irritation and itching at the points of contact. There will often be open sores or scabs on the skin, allowing a secondary bacterial infection to begin.
Skin allergies are very common in dogs. Skin diseases in dogs such as ear infections and allergies, are some of the most common health problems in dogs. Skin irritation usually shows up around the eyes and mouth, armpits, stomach, and anal area.
What To Do:
- Mist or wipe the spots with a solution of Oxy-Drops (1 teaspoon + 1 cup distilled water).
- Skin or serum (blood) testing for different allergens may then be performed to help pinpoint the exact cause. The most common is itching of the skin, either localized (one area) or generalized (all over the dog).
On the other hand, the flea allergic dog has a severe, itch-producing reaction when the flea's saliva is deposited in the skin. There will often be open sores or scabs on the skin, allowing a secondary bacterial infection to begin. Is your dog always scratching his skin, causing blisters and sores to form all over his body.
- Using shampoos that contain eucalyptus and aloe vera can help relieve the itching that your dog experiences until the skin heals.
- Diets rich in vitamins, minerals and fatty acids also aid in keeping your dog's skin healthy. Unlike humans who react to allergens with nasal symptoms, dogs with allergies react with skin problems.
Food allergies account for only about 10% of allergy problems in dogs, however they are easily treated so it makes sense to test for them if you suspect they may be the culprit of your dog's skin problems.
There are five known types of dog allergies: food allergy, flea allergy, bacteria allergy, contact allergy and atopy.
Often times, flea control programs produce more harmful effects than the fleas, including seizures and skin problems, so please use caution. (Check with your vet.) It is not the cat or dog hair itself that causes the allergy, however the old skin cells (dander) that are constantly being shed.

,How to Treat Your Dog For Skin Irritations
How to Treat Your Dog For Skin IrritationsBy JK MacDonald
From my experiences of dealing with my dog for skin problems. I have a lot of research time and suggestions to assist other canine owners in learning how to treat a dog or canine for skin disorders. In my experience the most common disorder found is itching, and chewing and on one certain area on the dog. If your dog has an allergic reaction to something, it will cause red patches, bald spots or irritate the skin. If open wounds or scabbing appears, the next thing that can happen is a bacterial infection.
Allergies are a very common occurrence in canines. Skin infections much like ear infections are a couple, of the most common issues affecting a dogs health. Skin problems normally present themselves in "hot spots", such areas as eyes, mouth, stomach, anus, and armpits.
How To Treat Dog For Skin Problems;
You could apply a solution made of Oxy-Drops to the area. To mix the solution use 1 teaspoon of oxy-drops to1 cup of distilled water. Now you should get blood testing done to pin point the exact cause on the problem. As mentioned earlier itchy skin is one of the most commonly found signs of a skin irritation in dogs.
On the flip side, a dog or canine that is allergic to fleas may have a severe reaction that can cause very itchy skin. Under these circumstances your dog may bite at or scratch the itchy spot, and could later lead to a bacterial infection. If your dog is always chewing and digging at their skin causing open wounds and sores, try the following.
To help sooth irritations on your dogs skin, use a shampoo that is made with eucalyptus and aloe. Diets with vitamins, minerals and fatty acids can help keep your canines skin clear, cleanand healthy. Dogs are like humans in certain ways, we have nasal problems in situations that your dog will have skin problems.
An allergy to food can also be a cause for skin problems in dogs, and can cause illness in dogs as well. Thankfully food allergies can be stopped by simply changing your dogs diet, so it is an easy fix. Hypoallergenic dog food would help resolve this problem.
Five very likely causes of dog skin problems are, contact allergies, bacteria, atopy, fleas, and food allergies.
Sometimes using flea medications can cause worse issues for your dog than the fleas do. These problems may include skin infections, irritations, even seizures. As you can see there are a number of causes of skin problems in dogs, and many ways to treat a dog or canine for skin problems so you should always consult your vet.
One of the most commonly over looked causes of skin problems in dogs, is an allergic reaction to something in the food they are eating. Some commercially made dog foods contain minerals and dyes, that can cause an allergic reaction, or even be very harmful to your dog's body system.

,Dog Allergy Symptoms
Dog Allergy SymptomsBy Daisy Sawtelle
From personal experience as a dog with allergies, I have several suggestions for training humans to become better dog mentors. Dog allergies can include skin allergies, dog food allergies (particularly corn and soy), house dust mites and ragweed. Many people don't suspect food allergies as the cause of their dog's itching because their pet has been fed the same food all its life and has just recently started having symptoms.
Symptoms of Fatty Acid Deficiency:
- Coarse dry hair.
Symptoms of Protein deficiency:
- Depressed food intake
Symptoms of allergic reactions to dogs include sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing.
Symptoms include:
- Weakness,
Symptoms can appear at any age, whether a pet has just started a new diet or has been eating the same food for several years.
Any health care suggestions located here are NOT to replace a veterinarian visit; please take your dog to a vet immediately at any sign of odd behavior or any symptoms of illness or injury. Dog owners may not want to part with their pets, despite the symptoms they endure. Short of getting rid of the dog, here are some ways to decrease dog allergen exposure for dog owners:
- Ensure the dog is neutered.
Keep the dog outside or in the garage, or in a part of the home with an uncarpeted floor.
Vacuum often with a HEPA-equipped vacuum cleaner. Purchase a HEPA room air cleaner for use in the bedroom and/or other parts of the home (it is greatest to keep the HEPA filter off of the floor so as to not stir up more dust).
Follow house dust mite avoidance precautions. If the above measures do not help to reduce allergic symptoms, getting rid of the pet dogs may be needed, particularly for people with uncontrolled asthma.
Generally speaking, poodles shed less hair and dander, and therefore cause fewer allergy symptoms. The fact that these small dogs are often bathed may be one reason why people with dog allergies have few symptoms with owning this breed. A number of medications can also help relieve the symptoms of allergies.
The allergens become airborne as microscopic particles which, when inhaled into the nose or lungs, can produce allergic symptoms. It is worth mentioning that the same source may be worsening your own allergy symptoms, so taking care of it would make life easier for both you and your pet.
Dogs can cause allergic reactions in people with allergies specific to dogs and in people with allergic asthma, a condition in which asthma symptoms are triggered by an allergic reaction.
In order to overcome these frustrating symptoms your approach needs to be thorough and systematic. Allergies have also been implicated as a possible cause of Acral Lick Granulomas, a frustrating, treatment resistant condition whereby the dog creates a sore on his skin from constant licking
DIAGNOSIS:
- If a dog has the above symptoms and responds well to the treatment measures outlined below, no further diagnostic tests may be needed.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Symptomatic Therapy Treating the dog's symptoms may include;
- Cool baths with or without colloidal oatmeal,
If the symptoms improve during the trial diet, go back to the original food for several days. How can a person reduce allergic symptoms to a pet. By keeping the animals out of the bedrooms at all times, we can greatly reduce the symptoms of pet allergies.
Owners of Bichons showing suspicious symptoms should seek immediate veterinary care as these diseases can strike with small or no warning and kill very quickly.
Dog allergies may produce symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes, stuffy nose, coughing, sneezing, skin rash, swelling, and breathing problems. Dog allergies may be the result of seasonal conditions, environmental factors or symptoms of food allergies.
Dog allergies are very similar to human allergies and also produce the same symptoms as human allergies.
