Exercise Can Help Train Your DogBy Denny Phillips

Many of a dog's behavioral problems can be attributed to a lack of proper exercise. Exercise plays a very important part in helping and assisting to keep your dog physically, as well as emotionally, happy.

Of course, the physical part of exercise is obvious. Exercise can take and keep your dog at a proper weight and help him avoid health issues that can derive from being overweight. Giving your dog the proper amount of exercise can help him avoid diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and even some forms of cancer, as well as other issues that may arise from excessive weight (like arthritis).

But did you know that exercise can also help your dog be emotionally happy? If you take a look at what your dog does all day, you can begin to realize that he may be bored. Does your dog seem to sleep all day? Many dogs do. And if your dog is bored, he may be more apt to get into mischief. He also may look for ways to get attention, such as misbehaving, chewing things, or eliminating waste in inappropriate places. All of these can be due to a lack of proper exercise.

Exercising your dog can help to control many behavioral problems. Not only will it prevent your dog's boredom, however it will also tire him out so that he may have no energy left to get into mischief or seek other attention.

Have you also realised that while you are exercising your dog, you are also inadvertently training him? If you take your dog for walks around the neighborhood, while he is on his leash he is learning to obey your commands. He is learning how to behave with respect to the people or other animalshe meets and learns to become a sociable pet. He is also learning how to be street-wise.

If you are doing some other form of exercise with your dog-say, even playing ball-you are still teaching him the rules of how you want him to behave. For example, you throw the ball and he fetches it. He then must put the ball down before you can throw it again. He is learning the 'sit-stay-fetch' commands. He is learning that you are the one in control, or the 'pack leader', and that he must follow your commands. It is a reward system. If he does not do as you say, he does not get the pleasure of chasing the ball again.

So exercise, even if you do not realize it, can help to train your dog. It is a fun way for your dog to learn commands and how to obey you. As an added bonus, exercising your dog can also help you to get in your own exercise regime.

Help Your Dog Gain 2 to 3 Years of Life by Exercising - 3 Benefits to ExerciseBy Darrin Nelson

Benefit # 1 Reduce common behavior problems such as barking, digging, and hyperactivity

Would you like to stop your dog from barking in the yard? Does your dog find digging holes for you to fill amusing? Are you unable to calm your dog down in a reasonable timeframe? If you answered yes to any of these questions you are not alone.

Studies have shown that proper exercise for your dog reduces and sometimes even eliminates these three common problems. Proper exercise can vary depending on your dog's breed, size and health condition. If your dog hasn't been receiving a lot of exercise then you want to start with a gradual program such as walking or even playing a game like hide and seek.

Benefit # 2 Reduce the odds of obesity with your dog.

Exercise is a major key to a healthy dog. Today obesity is estimated to effect 20-30% of dogs. Does your dog fall under this category? Did you know that if your dog is over weight it reduces the lifespan by 2 to 3 years! The most common health problems related to obesity is heart disease, diabetes (A disease in which the body cannot produce insulin or cannot use insulin to its full potential. It is characterized by high blood glucose levels.) and osteoarthritis. If your dog is over weight then do not delay any longer. Start today developing a healthy plan that includes proper diet and exercise.

Obesity also reduces the quality of life. If a dog or canine is overweight chances are they are very uncomfortable on many different levels and unable to exercise. They become tired quickly, out of breathe and tend to overheat quicker than usual. All of these symptoms prevent the owner and dog to enjoy healthy time together.

Benefit # 3 Increases your relationship with your dog.

Dogs that are not exercised properlycan become depressed. They gain a sense of being neglected and over time become very bored. Be careful because this type of disposition leads to other behavior problems such as chewing things they shouldn't.

The relationship with my dog is very strong which I contribute to the time exercising together. My dog is always happy and obedient to see me, however I also do notice that when I have been too busy to spend the right time with her, she tends to look bored and not as energetic.

Playing games with your dog is a superb way to get exercise together. My dog loves just about any kind of balls, leather footballs are her favorite. So we generally end of playing either a game of football or soccer each day. But other games that are fun as well is Hide and Seek, Find the Bone and even Follow the Leader. I learned about Follow the Leader from a trainer, great game! You set up a small obstacle course in your yard and have your dog follow you through the course. It is also a superb way to strengthen training commands such as sit, stay and down.

Expand Your Eating HorizonsBy Denny Phillips

If you are eating the same old foods day in and day out, you are probably suffering from mealtime boredom. It doesn't matter if you eat out a lot, order in or prepare your own meals at home. It happens to everyone. You can become bored with your meals.

Eating boredom doesn't make for healthy eating either. A good diet is a varied diet-a small bit of everything from all the food groups to give your body all the nutrition (diet) it needs.

The lucky thing is that it can be easy and fun to change your habits and expand your eating horizons. Be a small adventurous and follow these suggestions:

1. Make a point of trying at least one new food a month. Try a different vegetable you see at your grocery store. Do you know what Bok Choy is? How about a new fruit-perhaps a cactus pear? Have you tried adding Danish blue cheese to a salad?

2. Visit new restaurants that offer food from different countries. You'll be surprised at the yummy and different dishes each culture has to offer. Tai and Japanese restaurants are all the rage nowadays, however have you tried a Mongolian grill?

3. Search out new recipes from newspapers, magazines or from the web. Even using ingredients you already have on hand, you can learn new ways to use them in exciting new and tasty dish offerings.

4. Try using different grains in place of the standard staple choices of rice or potatoes. Couscousis quick and easy to make, or do you even know what millet is?

5. Be adventurous and scramble up your meals. Have leftover pizza or a chicken breast for breakfast or how about a dinner omlette?

6. Don't be too set in your ways. Try that food you are sure you hate in different ways. You may gag at cooked spinach, however why not try it raw in a salad. It preferences totally different. Or maybe you don't like skim milk, however how about trying the chocolate variety?

7. Don't be afraid to experiment with your cooking. You don't even have to follow any recipes. Just a small of this and a small of that and you may be on your way to a new taste sensation.

Everyone has likes and dislikes, however eating the same thing every day all the time is bound to put anyone into an eating boredom. And when food boredom sets in, you are more apt to reach for the junk food. Experiment and be adventurous with your normal meals, and you are sure to enjoy your healthy meals again.
